Which side is the sunrise on my flight?

Sunrise is the mirror image of sunset. The sun comes up in the east, so an early departure or an overnight arrival gives one side of the cabin the whole show.

The short version

Flying north at dawn: sunrise on the right. Flying south at dawn: sunrise on the left. Flying east: it comes up ahead of you. Flying west at dawn: the colour is behind you, and the lit landscape ahead is often the better view.

Overnight flights

On a red-eye the sunrise usually arrives during cruise, well before descent, so the sun side is fixed for a long stretch. We use your scheduled times and the route's actual path rather than a straight line where live data allows it.

Why we give a confidence figure

Sun position is very high confidence. Anything depending on which runway is in use is lower. We show both so you never get false certainty.
